5 things I wish I knew before breastfeeding
1. When I had my first baby and had trouble with latching (after trying everything and ruling out a tongue tie), a few friends recommended nipple shields. While they may only be a short-term solution, they definitely got me through some tough (and painful) times!
2. While the Haaka and similar devices (love the Elvie Curve) can be very helpful for building a milk supply, my dr. recommended that I use it sparingly as it was causing me to overproduce + leading to mastitis. I found this to be excellent advice!
3. After two unpleasant bouts of mastitis, a friend recommended sunflower lecithin supplements to help with milk flow/avoid engorgement. Game changer! I started taking them as soon as i started feeling engorged, and was even able to avoid antibiotics when I felt mastitis coming on in its early stages. As I'’ve been weaning and ending my nursing journey, i have been taking it regularly as well!
4. Trying different positions can help. My first baby could only nurse while we were both laying on my side for months! Go figure.
5. Most importantly, breastfeeding can be freaking HARD. I frequently reminded myself, especially during the first sleepless months, that fed is best, and while breastfeeding can have amazing benefits, it is NOT worth a mental breakdown! Be gentle and kind to yourself, and do what is right for you and your baby. Seek support from your doctor, a lactation specialist and/or fellow mom friends!
